DIY art is a great way to add a personal touch to your room, pun intended! And you don’t have to be a classically trained artist. There’s no shortage of trendy home décor you can pick up at the store, but creating your own art is one way to begin to break the mold. How you decorate around that piece is what will make it feel truly unique to your home. Here are some different ways you can decorate around a DIY art project and really own the trend.

Tell a story. Pairing your DIY art with a collage of family photos or posters from your favourite movie is one way of adding a personal touch to your wall. You can also create a vignette of your life by adding a shelf featuring souvenirs from places you’ve traveled, childhood mementos, or trinkets symbolizing life milestones. Remember, you want your home to be a reflection of who you are!

Channel your passion. Maybe you’re into music and you have a classic guitar you want to put on the wall. Great! Work in the colour of the guitar to your DIY art piece. Or if you have a love for flamingos, go with that! Add elements of pink or warm beach vibes into your DIY art and the pieces you pair it with to create a flamingo lover’s dream. It’s your room, fill it with what you love, it doesn’t always have to be a framed print!

Make a statement. Paint an accent wall that uses one of the primary colours from your art. This requires a bit more commitment, but if your DIY art is a piece you really want to show off, make it the focal point of the room. Don’t be afraid to make a big statement, it helps you own your space!

Now that you have some ideas on how to take a trend and own it in your space, here are some personal tips from décor and design lovers to help you get over any hang ups.

Pick a colour scheme: if you stick to colours in the same family, the gallery wall will flow and be pleasing to the eye. The colours will tie everything together and tell a story. Starting with one central piece of art and working out from there is a great way to start! Have fun! You can choose to follow simple tips & tricks while adding your own flair, or you can throw caution to the wind and create something wild that reflects your unique personality. Gallery walls are meant to be fun! “ – Christine Kissick, The Brogs at Home

“Framing Matters: With a gallery wall, framing is key. Yes, different colours of frames can work, but it's more difficult to pull off. So if you're starting from scratch, I find it helps if you have cohesiveness or not too many different colours of frames. It's easier to create a collection with sameness so if the art is not themed, and there isn't a common denominator like colour in the art itself, perhaps framing the art pieces is the same coloured frame will help anchor the look.” – Jan Halvarson, founder of Poppy Talk
